Top tips for preparing your kids for a photoshoot
Making Family Photo Sessions Fun: A Stress-Free Approach
Getting family photos taken should be a fun, memorable experience—not a stressful one! But when kids feel pressured to “behave for the photographer,” they might come into the session expecting it to be no fun. Instead, let’s set the stage for excitement and joy.
Building Excitement Before the Session
Instead of framing the session as something they have to do, talk about it as an adventure. Tell them a friend is taking your family pictures and that you’re going to a fun park or the river to play and capture special moments together. This helps shift their perspective from obligation to excitement.
For some kids, the promise of a small treat afterward—like ice cream or a movie—can make the whole experience even more enjoyable. It turns the session into part of a fun family outing rather than just another task on the calendar.
A promise of a small treat after is a good incentive for some kids to look forward to the session.
Plan for a Smooth Day
Think about what else is happening on the day of your session and try to avoid wearing everyone out beforehand. Maybe push an errand or two to later that week or plan for plenty of downtime between soccer practice and your session. Also, plan extra time for getting ready—family timing almost never goes as planned (at least at my house!). Adding an extra 15 minutes to your “getting ready” schedule is a great tip to keep stress levels low.
And don’t forget snacks! For the littles, for yourself—bringing along a snack and some water can go a long way in keeping everyone happy and energized.
Letting Kids Have a Say
Give your kids some ownership in the process! Let them pick a couple of poses they’d like to try—Pinterest is a great place to find fun, playful ideas together. You can also practice some movement-based “poses” at home to get them comfortable with the idea of being in front of the camera.
A Judgment-Free Zone
Kids have good days and bad days—mine included! I understand that new places, different outfits, and unfamiliar routines can be overwhelming for little ones. That’s why I approach every session with patience and flexibility. If things aren’t going well, we can take a break, switch things up, or even reschedule if needed. No judgment, no stress—just a commitment to capturing beautiful, authentic moments.
Family photos should reflect genuine connection, not forced smiles. When kids feel comfortable and excited, their joy shines through naturally. My goal is to make your session stress-free, fun, and full of real moments you’ll cherish forever.
